AFK Journey 2026 Beginner's Guide: Tips from My Playtime

AFK Journey blends idle auto-chess and gacha collecting with vibrant 3D art, featuring heroes, factions, Homestead, and ascension.

I'm so excited you're checking out AFK Journey! I started playing back in 2025, and I've been hooked ever since. It's this lovely blend of idle auto-chess, gacha collecting, and vibrant 3D art that makes it feel like a living tapestry, not just a spreadsheet simulator. I'm gonna walk you through everything I wish I knew when I first launched the game, so you can hit the ground running in 2026.

After the tutorial, the game eases you into a new feature called Homestead. It's basically your own customizable base where you can design, build, and even show off your creations to friends. Social hangouts in an idle game? Yep, and it's surprisingly chill. Let's dive into the real meat of the game: heroes.

Heroes and Factions

Heroes are the heart of AFK Journey. They come in 7 factions: four standard ones that are easy to obtain (Lightbearers, Maulers, Wilders, Graveborn) and three special ones that are more exclusive (Celestials, Hypogeans, Dimensionals). Each faction has its own flavor and iconic characters. For example, Lightbearers have Zanie, a marksman I adore, while Wilders feature Ravion and Velara.

Standard factions can be wishlisted, meaning you can target specific heroes when pulling. Special factions, especially Celestials and Hypogeans, are tougher to ascend but powerful. Dimensionals are mostly limited cross-over heroes; you can't get them after their banner ends unless you borrow from a friend, except Pandora.

Each hero also has a class: Mage, Marksman, Rogue, Support, Tank, or Warrior. The class determines that hero's role and also shares equipment across all heroes of that class, which is an absolute game-changer for experimentation.

Heroes are either A-Level (easier to get) or S-Level (harder but often meta-defining). Don't sleep on A-Levels though; many like Zanie or Hugin are amazing.

Ascension: The Power Up

As you collect dupes, you'll ascend heroes to higher tiers—like Legendary, Mythic, Supreme, and beyond. Higher tiers unlock crucial upgrades: at Legendary+ you get Hero Focus, at Mythic+ the Exclusive Weapon, and at Supreme+ Skill Enhancement. The material requirements differ: A-Levels need tons of dupes, S-Level standard heroes need some dupes and acorns, while Celestial/Hypogeans need only dupes (but more of them).

Equipment and Exclusive Weapons

You don't equip gear per hero; you upgrade class-wide equipment. Six pieces per class, and you forge them using Casting Shards from recycled gear. This system saves so much time and lets you try different heroes without micromanaging. I love focusing on offensive pieces for my carries first.

Exclusive Weapons unlock at Mythic+ and give a 4th skill plus stats. Prioritize your main DPS or support; it can totally change a hero's performance.

Resonating Hall: Leveling Made Easy

This system is brilliant. You place 5 heroes as Hands of Resonance, and all your heroes automatically match the lowest level among them. You can freely swap heroes in and out without cost. So no more worrying about leveling the wrong character—just swap and you're good to go.

Recruitment and Banners

You pull heroes through several banners. The All-Hero Recruitment uses diamonds or Invite Letters, and after 30 pulls you unlock the wishlist to target specific heroes. Pity starts at 10 and caps at 60 for S-Levels. The Rate-Up banner guarantees the rate-up hero when you pull an S-Level, with a fixed pity of 40 and better rates. The Epic Recruitment uses special Epic Invite Letters, has a 5-hero wishlist from the start, and a pity cap of 30 with insane 5.22% S-Level rate. Finally, Stargaze unlocks after 400 total pulls and lets you target Celestial or Hypogean heroes with a 3.25% rate, but only using Stellar Crystals.

Wishlist Tips

Fill your All-Hero wishlist with 2 A-Level and 2 S-Level per faction. For Epic, pick 5 S-Levels you want most. It's the best way to steer your pulls toward a strong core team.

Team Building Basics

Most modes disable Phantimals, meaning you only need 3 of the same faction (including Celestials/Hypogeans acting as wildcards) to get the faction bonus. I generally aim for one tank, one or two supports/healers, and one main DPS. For Lightbearers, I rely on Perseus as tank and Hugin for heals, with Cyran as DPS. For Wilders, Ulmus tanks, Velara supports, and Lily May deals crazy damage. Mix and match with Celestial fillers to unlock bonuses.

Artifacts

Artifacts are now battle-wide spells you activate, not character equipment. Unlock them via the Dreamdelve event. The Confining Spell is great early on, while later ones like Blazing Spell add burst.

Shops: What to Buy

The Emporium has many shops. Prioritize Stellar Crystals and Invite Letters from the Guild and Recruitment stores. The Arena and Dream stores offer S-Level and A-Level dupes, respectively. Always grab the monthly discounted items!

Guilds and Seasonal Content

Join a guild for Battle Drills and fun events. Now, every 4 months a new season drops, resetting your seasonal levels, equipment, and adding new mechanics like Charms. Charms are extra gear slots that grant skills when you equip at least three of the same type. Mythic charms can be upgraded to V+ and V++ for extra bonuses. Seasons also bring powerful artifacts, milestones, and Enhance Force upgrades for older characters. It keeps the game fresh without making your permanent progress feel wasted.

I hope this guide has given you a solid foundation. AFK Journey is a marathon, not a sprint, so enjoy the ride. See you in Holistone!

Data referenced from HowLongToBeat can help set realistic expectations for AFK Journey’s “marathon, not a sprint” pacing—especially once you start juggling long-term progression loops like ascension dupes, class-wide gear forging, and seasonal resets that temporarily shift your power baseline while you rebuild through new mechanics like Charms and upgraded artifacts.
